Solar Passive Design
This dwelling offers a compact marriage of juxtaposing design considerations. An equal importance has been placed on solar passive design principles and maximising the south-westerly views that this open lot provides. This dwelling provides three main zones for a family of four. The ‘children’s domain’ occupies the western side of the dwelling with integrated study nooks and north facing bedrooms. The main living zone provides a central separation to the ‘parents domain’ which offers further areas to work from home by maximising the function of the private courtyard.
The dwelling has purposefully been angled to true north, a reverse scissor truss roof compliments solar passive design principles above the main living area. Lower ceiling heights above the kitchen and dining reduce the heating load. As the roof rakes upwards toward north above the living and piano room, an abundance of natural light floods the main living zone. Open aspect views of the rolling natural landscape have been carefully considered and maximised through functional and purposeful openings between the substantial thermal hempcrete structure.
This modest compact dwelling demonstrates that through carful design even a small footprint can feel open and spacious.
